How Lawyers Are Using AI?

Lawyers and law firms are increasingly accessing the advances of Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to improve their practice and provide excellent results and services to their clients.

According to a study by researchers at Princeton University, “The legal services industry is one of the industries that is highly exposed to AI language modeling. Here are numerous ways in which lawyers are using AI in the legal industry:

1. Legal Research:

AI-powered applications are excellent at researching and scanning through a wide range of legal documents, cases, jurisdictions, practice areas, and statutes.

It can assist human lawyers in finding relevant information regarding a case and speed up the data-gathering process. So, lawyers can focus more on representing their clients, networking, and more.

2. Litigation analysis:

Lawyers can use AI-driven applications to find out the worth of a particular case. Lawyers can use AI to find out about similar cases that have taken place in the past and based on that decide on whether the case is worth it or not.

This way lawyers can easily learn and study any previous case and make better choices based on the information generated by AI technologies.

3. Document management:

The documentation process is often quite challenging and time-consuming. Even though law firms have shifted from paper documents to electronic records can be quite exhausting for lawyers.

This is where AI-driven software assists lawyers in storing and organizing legal documents such as files, contracts, case studies, emails, notes, and more with proper storing methods which makes it easier for lawyers to find their files.

4. Predictive Analytics:

Human lawyers can also utilize AI technology to analyze data and predict numerous case outcomes.

This way lawyers can understand various results based on which they can generate more informed decisions and help them prepare useful legal strategies. This way lawyers can prepare themselves for various outcomes and cases beforehand.

5. Document Automation:

This process helps generate useful documents using excellent templates that can be accessed by legal professionals. This way lawyers can automatically enter details directly from their case records into the templates.

This legal document automation helps save lawyers time and effort by generating a centralized and efficient process for producing legal documents such as agreements, contracts, letters, pleading, and more.

Is the Law being taken over by AI?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is indeed transforming the legal industry with its advanced technology and ability to perform a variety of automated tasks in the legal industry.

However, AI cannot take over the entire field of law, as there are still various areas such as Client representation, Negotiations, Ethical Decision-making, Courtroom Advocacy, and more that cannot be replaced by AI.

Instead, AI is being used in law firms for better efficiency, improved accuracy, and the ability to perform repetitive tasks. This includes tasks such as Documentation, Legal Research, Contract Analysis, Predictive analysis, and more.

How Does AI Replace Lawyers?

AI has the potential to replace lawyers when it comes to performing repetitive or automated tasks. One of the major areas where artificial intelligence technologies are already replacing lawyers is “Legal Research.”

Most law firms are accessing AI technology to find relevant information and data on their cases, as AI is way faster than humans and perform research on case studies, files, previous cases, and more quickly. This helps save lawyers time allowing them to focus on more important and complex tasks.

In addition, Automated legal research can also help provide more relevant and structured results which can help enhance the experience of the lawyers. Apart from research, AI technology can also help fulfill documentation tasks and draft, review, and compare documents in a fast and organized manner.

The replacement of AI to human lawyers only occurs in those areas that include automated tasks. Although it can significantly impact replacing a few jobs and positions in law firms, it cannot entirely replace lawyers.

Are Robot Lawyers Legal?

Robot lawyers are allowed in some courts as they allow defendants to wear hearing aids, a few versions of which are Bluetooth-connected. This is how Browder determined how robot lawyers like “DoNotPay” technology can be used legally in this case.

Although the tech that runs DoNotPay is considered illegal in most courtrooms. Few states require their parties to record consent, which rules out the possibility of a robot lawyer or AI lawyer entering the courtroom.

Overall, DoNotPay was considered for 300 cases for a trial of its robot lawyer; there were only two that were feasible, as stated by Browder.

“It’s technically legal as it is within the letter, but nobody could have predicted this outcome,” Browder explained.

“Although it doesn’t align with the law’s intention, we’re striving to make progress, especially for those who can’t afford legal assistance. If these cases succeed, it could motivate other courts to reconsider their regulations.”

Who Sued the World’s First Robot Lawyer?

Jonathan Faridian, a customer of DoNotPay sued the world’s first robot lawyer, alleging the company is practicing the law without a license. In the lawsuit, Faridian stated he demanded the jury to stop DoNotPay from engaging in unauthorized practice of law.

Fairdian claimed he subscribed to DoNotPay for the generation of demand letters, a small claims court filing, and a job discrimination complaint but received “substandard and poorly done” results.”

Although he was under the impression that generated results were sourced from a “competent lawyer”. The class-action lawsuit filed by Jonathan Faridian included all paying DoNotPay customers in the state of California.

Who is the First Law Firm to Use AI?

Baker & Hostetler was the first-ever law firm that hired an AI lawyer “ROSS” in May 2016. BakerHostetler licensed ROSS Intelligence for use in its Bankruptcy, Restructuring, and Creditors’ Rights team.

Who is the World’s First Artificial Intelligence Robot Lawyer?

DoNotPay is the world’s first artificial intelligence robot lawyer founded by British programmer Joshua Browder in 2015.

DoNotPay was launched as a chatbot service that can help provide legal advice and assistance to its users dealing with troubles related to late fees or fines.
